How to make Peanut Butter? | Homemade Crunchy Peanut Butter

Okay, here are some facts - [1] Peanut butter is super simple to make at home [2] Homemade peanut butter is way healthier than the shop bought ones [3] You need just 3 basic ingredients - peanuts, oil and honey - to make your own peanut butter at home... and most importantly [4] Peanut butter tastes simply YUM!

So aren't these reasons enough for you to hop right over to your kitchen and make your own batch of peanutty yumness?  :)

Peanut butter is commonly available in two variations - creamy and crunchy. My personally favourite is the one with some crunch. Those crunchy little bits of peanuts hidden away in the creamy butter is just the way I like mine. I am sharing the crunchy version here. Just do away with the crunch part, if you like yours simple and creamy. Alrighty, I am not holding you back anymore... lets jump right into the recipe :)

Makes: 1 small bottle
Adapted from: Flavours

Peanuts - 1 cup
Oil - 1 tbsp
Honey - 1 tbsp (as sweet as you like it)

  • Dry roast the peanuts on a pan for a few minutes until they turn mildly brownish.
  • Take off the stove and allow it to completely cool.

  • If you like your peanut butter crunchy with a bits of peanuts in it, keep aside a little bit of roasted whole peanuts for adding in later. Transfer the remaining peanuts into a mixer and whizz for a few seconds until the peanuts are powdered.
  • If you like your peanut butter smooth and creamy, weell, add in the entire lot into the mixer grinder and blend to a fine powder.
  • Now add in oil and blend again. The texture of the mixture begins to thicken as the peanut butter takes shape.
  • Add in honey and blend again. The peanut butter begins to thicken as the oil form the peanuts also begin to ooze out.

  • Now, transfer the peanut butter onto a bowl.
  • In a mortar, crush the few peanuts that you had kept aside .
  • Toss these into the bowl and mix well into the butter.

  • Your crunchy peanut butter is ready to be yummed up! :)

  • The quantity of oil required is purely dependent on the variety of peanuts being used.
  • The addition of honey is optional. If you do not want it sweet, you can do away with the honey.
  • Adding honey thickens the mixture a little. If more honey is added, you may need to add in more oil too.
  • Store it in an air-tight container and refrigerate. It lasts for a few weeks (provided you manage to keep your hands off the jar the day you made them! :) )

We enjoyed it with simple homemade whole wheat bread... ah bliss! :) Recipe for basic whole wheat bread coming soon, stay tuned! :)
